The aim of the article is to present, at least in general outline, the figure of Professor Czesław
Majorek, as a teacher, a scientist and a person, whom I met nearly half a century ago, in the
beginning of 1950s, when he was a student of the pedagogical secondary school in Tarnów.
He was born in 1938; he was educated in Tarnów and Gdańsk, where in 1963 he graduated
from pedagogical studies. In 1968 he obtained Doctoral degree in Humanities, and in 1975
– the degree of Doctor Habilis in Humanities, in the field of history of education and history
teaching. In 1986 he was awarded the title of professor extraordinarius of Humanities, and
in 1997 – the title of professor ordinarius. His achievements in pedagogical and scientific
work were undoubtedly due to his high competence in research and teaching. Raised in rural
environment, trained to be a teacher since he was 14, he passed all stages and types of the
post-war pedagogical schooling (pedagogical secondary school, teacher training studium and
the higher pedagogical school). Professor Majorek was a person of great self-discipline, great
power of character and unusual strength of will. He required a lot from his inferiors, but most
of all – from himself. He was a sensitive man, kind towards people, their problems and needs.
His personality traits were reflected in the style of his scientific works, characterized by
a matter-of-fact approach and far reaching objectivism. He was a scientist of broad research
interests. He was not only an excellent specialist in the history of modern Polish education,
but also a valued expert on history teaching and civil education. In the international forum,
he was a personality well-known to and respected by both historians of education and history
pedagogues. An important sphere or Professor’s activity was educating new scientific staff.
He supervised about 150 Master theses in history and pedagogy, and promoted 12 doctors. He
frequently acted as the reviewer in doctoral and habilitation procedures. He reviewed many
professorship applications, also in the USA and Australia. It must be noted with satisfaction
that on June 6, 2006, a solemn ceremony took place, during which the Secondary Schools
Complex in Ryglice received the school banner and the name of Professor Czesław Majorek.

Włoch, Anna
The present article describes the scientific achievements of the researchers of the Pedagogical
Academy of Cracow in the field of broadly understood history of education. The analysed
works were published in years 1996–2000. It must be noted that the issues in history of
education, schools and upbringing enjoyed – as they also had earlier – great popularity, not
only strictly among the historians of education, or historians of other specializations, but also
among the researchers in the fields of pedagogy, library science, Polish language, philosophy
or sociology. Still the majority of publications were written by historians of education, the
academic employees of the Chair of History of Education. In sum, in recent years, among all
the employees of the Pedagogical Academy, 44 persons published articles, essays, and other
papers concerning history of education, which proves that the topic was popular and willingly
examined. It is worth mentioning that in the discussed years the research methodology
changed slightly, and that more and more often history of education was connected with
other disciplines, such as pedagogy, special pedagogy, comparative pedagogy, or European
education.
Particular paragraphs of the article focus on the achievements of scientists from all chairs
and institutes in which publications on history of education were written, including their
thematic scope.

In years 1987-1995, in the Higher School of Pedagogy in Cracow, research was conducted into
the history of education and pedagogical thought; the research was presented in numerous
national and international publications. The greatest contribution to the research was made
by the scientists from the Department of History of Education: Zygmunt Ruta, Czesław
Majorek, Jan Krukowski, Wacław Marmon, Andrzej Kliś, Jan Ryś and Ryszard Ślęczka. Among
the important publications that appeared in that period we should mention: a monograph
by Z. Ruta Prywatne szkoły średnie ogólnokształcące w Krakowie i województwie krakowskim
w latach 1932–39 (Private comprehensive secondary schools in Cracow and the Cracow
voivodeship in years 1932–39) and Cz. Majorek’s book Historia utylitarna i erudycyjna. Szkolna
edukacja historyczna Galicji 1772–1818 (Utilitarian and erudite history. School historical
education in Galicia). Research results in the form of articles were most frequently published
in Rocznik Komisji Nauk Pedagogicznych PAN (Yearly Journal of the Committee on Pedagogical
Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences) of the Cracow branch, and in Rocznik Naukowo-
Dydaktyczny WSP (Yearly Scientific-Didactic Journal of the Higher School of Pedagogy in
Cracow), dedicated to works in the history of education and schools.
Individual projects were supported by team research, realized in cooperation with University
of Warsaw, University of Wrocław, and the Institute of the History of Science of PAN
in Warsaw. In cooperation with the Biography Department of the Institute of History of
WSP, research was conducted into the history of the Malopolska towns. Monographs on
Bochnia, Dąbrowa Tarnowska, Jaworzno, Krynica, Nowy Sącz, Siewierz, Tarnow, Trzebinia,
and Wierzchoslawice were created. Also, Szkolny słownik biograficzny (School biographical
dictionary) and several volumes of Wielka Historia Polski (Great history of Poland) were
written.
Active scientific contacts were maintained with research centres in Europe, the USA and
Canada. The researchers participated in prestigious international meetings of historians of
education and history teaching specialists, e.g. the International Standing Conference for the
History of Education.
Historical-educational research of narrower range was also conducted by other researchers
of WSP in Cracow, among others by Jacek Chrobaczyński and Henryka Kramarz.

Krukowski, Jan
The result of thematic and pedagogical teacher-training offered by the Cracow Higher School
of Pedagogy, established in 1946, was the guarantee that history of education had it proper
place in all study courses; later it was taught only in pedagogy and special pedagogy. The first
lecturer of history of education, employed in 1946, was Doctor Wanda Bobkowska from the
Jagiellonian University. Full-time-employed historians of education started work in the chair
of Polish History, established on October 1, 1953, whose head since October 1, 1955 was
Associate Professor Ignacy Zarębski, a historian of education. The second full-time historian
of education, Zygmunt Ruta, was employed in 1959, and the third, Dr. Wincenty Spiechowicz,
in 1961. In 1972, Department of History of Education and Upbringing was established within
the Institute of History. In 1976 it was divided and moved to the Institute of Pedagogy, where
it functioned until 1982, when the institute was dissolved. On January 1, 1982, the Department
was renamed as the Chair of History of Education, an independent scientific and didactic unit,
functioning in the structure of the Faculty of Humanities, and since 1992 – in the Faculty of
Pedagogy.
Since the transfer to the Faculty of Pedagogy, academic teachers of the Chair conduct classes
in history of education, history of pedagogical thought, history of special education, history of
physical education and sport, comparative pedagogy, comparative pedagogy of educational
systems, European education, EU educational programmes, and occasionally in Polish history,
history didactics, civil education didactics, and history of science. The Chair also conducts
two post-graduate courses: organization and management of education, and vocational
counselling.
The Chair’s academic teachers belong or belonged to: International Standing Conference
for the History of Education /ISCHE/, Comparative Education Society in Europe /CESE/,
Towarzystwo Historii Edukacji (History of Education Society), etc.
In the Pedagogical University of Cracow, history of education is practised as a science by
specialized historians of education, teachers of other units on the margin of their discipline,
and particular subjects pedagogues. The most frequently examined topic is pedagogical
practice, less frequently examined – pedagogical theory, and only occasionally – modern
pedagogical theories.
The effect of research is promotion of master theses, doctoral dissertations, reviewing
doctoral and habilitation works, and participating in promotion committees. Most often the
supervisors of master theses were Professor Zygmunt Ruta, Professor Czesław Majorek,
and Professor Jan Krakowski. They were also participants of doctoral procedures; Professor
Ruta and Professor Majorek also participated in habilitation procedures and in evaluation of
achievements of professorship candidates.
