Internet Archive, an ambitious project by Brewster Kahle, seems to be one of the more
interesting bottom-up initiatives, not connected directly with government financing.
Although this multi-format archive is known in Poland mainly through archiving old
versions of websites from all over the world, one must not forget that its mission is
also to gather ebooks and other written texts, sound and visual files, as well as old
software versions for various platforms. Among petabytes of archived data there are
over 11 million various texts in digital version (in comparison, the Digital Libraries
Federation library comprises over 4 million digital objects), of which over 10 million
is free to access. The archive resources include mainly texts written in English (over
8.6 million), but there are also examples of texts in most known languages. Texts in
Polish comprise a group of almost six thousand.
The article aims at propagating the idea of spreading knowledge within the Internet
Archive project. It describes documents in Polish from the eBooks and Texts collection,
as well as the Open Library service, together with the Bookserver platform, thanks to
which it is possible to rent digital copies of copyrighted texts.

Magazines are an important part, and for some digital libraries even a majority of digital
resource. Individual issues of old titles are scattered throughout many institutions
and disseminated independently, often without any connections allowing for locating
other parts of the resource. The effects of the dispersion can be minimized, however.
The results of the digitalization projects show variety in the way of approaching the
resource. Comparing the approaches with the aspects of delivering the resource can
help with selecting adequate methods of creating and describing the presented documents
in order to facilitate their use in the future.

The need to connect the traditional aesthetic school (based on the philosophy of art)
with a new variety of the electronic-media sphere is an issue new media theorists have
been working on for many years. The new area, described among others as: communication,
digital, electronic, or new-media aesthetics, due to the diversity (formal and
technical) of the graphical material, which it studies – it cannot be described using
the traditional methodology, it also cannot be limited to the same aesthetic framework.
Different contexts can be used to characterize virtual exhibitions, photography,
videos or electronic publications (decoded using fractal compression, rather than the
traditional/linear one). With the arrival of the electronic media art, a “qualitative”
shift of the presented material takes place. According to common assumption, the
differentiating factor of a piece of art becomes its “generability” rather than “reproducibility”.
As Krystyna Wilkoszewska points out, the new media aesthetics can
draw from ages-long traditions, or it can (considering the fact that electronic media
radically change - in terms of ontology and epistemology – the basic elements of the
aesthetic situation) try to build a digital aesthetics from ground up as an aesthetics
of a new kind of culture and art29. According to the authors of this article, the tool for
studying new digital material can be found in inter alia the rules (the so called “eight
laws of artistic experience” by Vilayanur Subramanian Ramachandran and William
Hirstein30) successfully used in visuality research. The article includes an analysis of
the graphic layout od selected electronic book covers. It will mainly comprise digital
born works (not related to any traditional/printed equivalents). Attention is also
paid to the visual aspect of this group of objects. The considerations focus on which
tendencies in graphic design of modern e-books can be observed today.

The phenomenon commonly called piracy has generated more and more interest in
recent years. The area, at first only known to a small part of the Polish society, has
become common at the beginning of 2012, in connection with the works of the government
on the ratification of ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement). The
activization of a large part of Polish people showed that the issue is not marginal. The
illegal circulation of culture is also an important element of the digital book market
in Poland, especially in the era of common Internet access. Despite holding debates
and making attempts at solving the problem, there are still many aspects of piracy
that are not even clearly defined. This is yet another reason to take a closer look at
this phenomenon.
The article presents the terms connected with the topic of piracy, with special
consideration for digital books. An attempt is also made to distinguish the main
aspects responsible for the development of illegal circulation of culture, as well as
to describe the example methods of combating the phenomenon. In order to explore
this topic, a correlation is made between it and the history of shaping the copyright
laws and the development of the piracy market. Furthermore, various stances on
piracy are presented, including the perspectives of creators and publishers, as well as
recipients of culture.
