http://hdl.handle.net/11716/10743 2026-04-19T11:30:00Z http://hdl.handle.net/11716/10759 Pomiędzy utopią a predykcją (refleksje publicystyczne) Jankowski, Paweł The article presents the vision of the development of countries and societies as seen in three works from the 1990s: Francis Fukuyama’s End of History, Samuel Huntington’s The Clash of Civilisations and Benjamin Barber’s Jihad vs McWorld. The author compares these visions to the contemporary world, together with their utopian and dystopian aspects, wondering which of them more accurately predicted the directions of its development. Treating these works as an entry point, he considers the alternatives of the dominating liberal democracy, analyses the features of the more and more popular neomedievalism and the flaws and advantages of direct democracy. Talking about direct democracy, he describes the only functioning example of such political system in Switzerland. Describing its details and specification, he wonders if the system analogous to the Swiss one could be useful somewhere else. By referring to this problem in the context of technological advancement, he considers the issue of developing direct democracy with the use of electronic media. In the end, the again refers to the works by Barber, Fukuyama and Huntington, expressing his regret for the lack of other, equally bold visions of the world and political systems development in contemporary times. Próba charakterystyki polskich utopii socjalnych Śliwa, Michał The research aim of this article was to analyze the socialist utopia as an idealistic inspiration in the process of democratizing the socio-political system in the perspective of two centuries; from the times of the imaging of the idealistic system picture by Wojciech Gutkowski in the second half of the 18th century to the ancestors of Polish socialist thought, all the way to the “Solidarity” revolution and further on, to the contemporary social life formed under the influence of the emancipation ideas and determined by the factors of the information revolution and globalization processes. This is why the author of this article seeks an answer to a question, what role in the new conditions does the socialist utopia fulfill – an idealistic impression of the social justice system, does it still have its impetus as a prospective idea and did it not stop being an inspiration to reform the state system, does it play a role of an axiological system in the form of a substitute on the conditions of the atrophy of the ethical fundaments of the social life and idea secularization. They are almost entirely pragmatic, detailed and often not thrilling. They are the domain of practitioners and experts, who have a special influence on the public decisions. The article considers especially these issues of co-decision making, which are related to expert knowledge. It is undoubtedly needed, but its excess influence can lead to instating a new kind of domination – one built on a scientifically or organizationally certified expert knowledge. The epistocracy created this way is considered here as an antiutopia in public management; the text includes the argumentation against it, and the remedy to it is seen in co-decision making.
