Firstly, the general situation in the secondary and higher schools is presented, on the basis of an analysis of the employed curricula. Secondly, the author focuses on the curriculum of the Polish and Belarusian language and culture studies at the Janka Kupala State University in Grodno. She outlines the range of preliminary knowledge of the Belarusian students before they study the dramatic works by Wyspiański. The main focus of the author’s interest, which logically stems from the Polish literature syllabus, is Wyspiański’s play “The Wedding”. Poets of the 19th (Mickiewicz) and 20th (Miłosz) century share the idea of the fight for the nation’s freedom, the concern for the “everyman”, and the problem of civic responsibility of an active man of culture. Mickiewicz and Miłosz were both born in the Polish eastern frontier territory, and their formation proceeded under the influence of the local folklore, customs, and the ways of life of the peoples inhabiting the region.
