The history of teacher education in Nitra reaches back to the 18th century and revolves&#13;
primarily around the work carried out by the Piarist monks (during the years 1701–1919).&#13;
The first part of the article deals with teacher education conducted by the Piarist Order.&#13;
The rest of the article discusses the work of other educational institutions – such as&#13;
the Roman Catholic Women’s Pedagogical Institute – in the area of teacher education&#13;
in Nitra.

A myth is one of the central concepts of modern cultural theory. The term is no longer&#13;
used in its original meaning of a fantasy story. Rather, myth is understood as telling of&#13;
the values that are key to a given culture. Hence, The Commission of National Education&#13;
myth talks about those of the Commission’s achievements that had a universal nature,&#13;
such as the ability to instill in the society a belief in: the necessity of a public and national&#13;
school; the educational work as a patriotic and civic activity; the human worth as dependent&#13;
on his or her education and quality of work; and the strong link between the prosperity&#13;
of a nation and its educational level. All these beliefs are still valid and important. Yet, the&#13;
knowledge about the Commission among the Polish society is small, and the myth of the&#13;
Commission remains underappreciated.

The most important symbol of school is its banner. Not only is it an element of the&#13;
given school’s unity, but it also serves as a carrier for symbolic and ideological content. In&#13;
Poland, there are fifty two schools which bear the name of The Commission of National&#13;
Education. From this has arisen the idea to analyze the banners of those schools in regard&#13;
to the symbols and mottos placed on them. Twenty six schools has answered the request&#13;
for provision of materials needed for the analysis. The images of banners were discussed&#13;
in reference to the circumstances of the conferment of the name of The Commission of&#13;
National Education to each school. The meaning of the symbols used on the banners&#13;
is pointed out in the summary. Furthermore, the postulate to continue the research on&#13;
this matter, also including schools bearing the names of individual members of The&#13;
Commission of National Education was put forward.
