The aim of the article is to present the use of qualitative methods in the completed research on the civil activity of secondary school students in Kraków, where focusing on the part of a reality allowed for observing the group in context and better understanding of the phenomenon. The article presents basic fortes and weaknesses of the quantitative and qualitative studies, as well as possibilities of secondary data analysis. The analysis results of the study conducted using the observation and interview (individual and group) methods and preliminary conclusions, which can be useful for quantitative research preparation for the 13–16 age group have been presented in the article. The realization of both quantitative and qualitative research does not, however, give a certain answer for all the research questions and brings many new challenges. Special attention has been paid to young citizens, born after 1989, who understand and respect the value of the socio-systematic changes in Poland different than their parents generation. Based on their own questionnaire study the Authors are also trying to describe the way of perceiving this phenomenon: how much is it just an emotional bond with the homeland, country, state, region, city, society, and how much is it a practical action for the good of the country or local society? The article also includes the overview of different views on patriotism in the theoretical approach. The phenomenon of patriotism is being considered in the context of the wider issue: national/European identity, hierarchy of values or citizen activity. They reflect the deep social relations and intentions, they create political space, in which units and groups can function, they can decide on the institutional frames of politics. They also determine the political discourse in all its kinds, one of them being a parliament debate. The aim of the article is to present the model of ideology-political discourse relation proposed by Teun van Dijk and the method allowing for the analysis of the ideological contents of statements by MPs. This method has been used to analyze two debates on the ritual slaughter conducted in 1936 and 2013. Different variables influencing the situation then and now have been taken into consideration, e.g. political system, politics, economy, as well as variables connected to interests of different groups and their representatives. One of these actions is the idea of deliberative democracy. Deliberative democracy is not only a multi-facet theoretical project (outlined briefly in the present article) but also a practice of promoting community participation and of introducing various, even non-standard, methods of participation. Such was the idea behind a presidential initiative in 2010 for setting up a platform for public discussion, Forum for Public Debate. The aims and objectives of the platform, its focus, underlying principles, as well as procedures in place and the results of what has been undertaken within its framework – they all show that the initiative is a clear manifestation of what is called deliberative democracy.
