The basic examples of the 20th century conceptual artworks, autotelically concentrated on their artistic features understood in the verbal interpretation, lead to analysis of the selected most contemporary installations created by Kara Walker, Stan Douglas, Bill Viola, Cerith Wyn Evans and Imogen Stidworthy. Descriptions and investigations discover the poetic constructions and through it - philosophical ideas, readable in verbal interpretation and found essential for the contemporary art. In such a context, autotelic attitudes are aesthetic problems considered in artworks, usually connected with universal issues of perception and human condition. The verbal interpretation understood as an utterance belongs to the visual artwork and also phenomenologically, temporarily suspends its visual character (epoché) to identify better the poetic and philosophical core of the contemporary artwork. The first approach analyzed is directed toward the work of a conceptualist, who chose verbal semantics as the subject matter of his artistic undertaking. Next, the „concrete poem“ is considered, which, according to the determinants of its kind, depends on the synthesis of that which is visual and that which is verbal, whereas the afterimages of writings refer back to the sensory perceptions of interaction with writing, where the formal aspect of the letters is the artistic subject matter. Sztuka Ewy Sataleckiej Stano, Bernadeta Ewa Satalecka is a graphic designer, typographer, stage designer and teacher. She makes visual presentations of texts with the music of such composers as Witold Lutoslawski, Witold Szalonek, Philip Glass and Alfred Schnittke. Her small cameral exhibitions include unique artistic books of poems by her sister Dagmara Kuczynska-Ginko or Tadeusz Slawek. These texts are printed also on cloth, transparent films and other materials, building environments in art galleries. In book design she tends to integrate typography and picture. One of the most important elements in her artworks is a letter, a sign and symbol, treated as a medium of emotions, and a letter transformed in space and motion. The article presents selected artistic series concerning various aspects of human existence: friendship, loneliness, memory. Horace’s idea named as ut picture poesis is considered here not merely a comparison but an idea of what poetry might be, i.e. the kind of artistic expression which engages more than the intellect and the sense of hearing. The references to the theories of de Saussure and the essays by Jonathan Richardson (the turn of the 18th century) and Samuel Beckett show how language (and literature) can be seen as more than a written/printed text. Such an approach towards literature seems to broaden its expressive functions.
