It is not for the first time that the diverse character of law in individual countries causes some
problems to translators of legal and law texts. The situation can be also noticed in the case of
people who translate into Russian texts concerning Polish criminal law – namely, forbidden
acts. Polish law in art. 7 § 1 of penal code distinguishes crime and minor offence. The task that
a translator (especially a sworn translator) very often face is to search equivalents for the
above notions. Dictionaries include suggestions without taking into consideration a specialist
legal character of mentioned terms or may even mislead a Russian reader. The present article
shows an attempt to characterize already existing equivalents and to answer the question if
we are dealing with untranslatability.
