The article attempts at describing the ways in which an author is present in the subjective
drama of “Ich-Dramatik”. This type of drama is associated mainly with August
Strindberg worldwide, and in Poland with Tadeusz Miciński among others. His early
work Noc rabinowa (The night of the Rabbis) was used as the main ground for analytical
references.
In line with the general trend of Young Poland, which is, among others, the effect of
contradictory influences of the philosophy of life and empiriocriticism, the lyrical
persona in Miciński’s drama is characterised by non-readiness, processuality, disharmony,
fragmentation. The drama becomes the ground for self-creation of the persona,
an act of “self-writing”. All the components of the multifaceted, rich, uncoordinated
dramatic reality are elements of the inner world of the author. They reflect the features
of the lyrical I: split character (second self construction, dialogue “I”), making
(futile) effort of establishing oneself into one coherent entity. Miciński’s subjectivism
is spiced with irony which emphasises the opposites that dictate the attitude of
the persona subject to the constant changes. It should also be mentioned that “Ich-
Dramatik” has caused a significant transformation of the traditional forms of drama.
