The debate on the pros and cons of coeducation began in the Polish territories during the 1870s. Teachers,
feminists, and ordinary left-leaning people were particularly active in advocating for coeducation. The most heated
part of the debate revolved around the potential impact of introducing coeducation in secondary schools: the
effects of coed learning on one’s educational outcomes, character development, and social views. Further,
coeducation played a role in the wider debate about differences between the nature of men and women. Despite the
spread of coeducation in the post-WWII world, the topic is still being debated, and the question of whether
coeducation does more good than harm remains unanswered.
