dc.description.abstract | The development of history of education in Rzeszów can be divided into two currents. The
first one, originated in the 19th century, was connected with the circles of teachers working
in secondary schools and teacher training seminaries. The list of researchers of that period is
opened by: Stanisław Sobieski (1827–1884), Jan Pękowski (1874–1959), Marcin Wołowiec
(1877–1971), Dr. Adam Ruczka (1883–1945), Mieczysław Adamowski (1892–1975), Dr. Juliusz
Kijas (1899–1967) and Antoni Gromski (1907–1982). Further development of the teachers’
current in history of education research occurred after the Second World War. Its creators
were representatives of historical sciences: Dr. Artur Kopacz (1884–1962), Emil Bielecki
(1905–1981), Dr. Kazimierz Skowroński (1907–1974), Dr. Aleksander Codello (1909–1975),
and historians specializing in history of education, i.e. Dr. Tadeusz Stanisz (1906–1988), Dr.
Henryk Smyczyński (1926–1990), Dr. Józef Świeboda and Dr. Eugeniusz Szal. On the other
hand, there existed the academic current in history of education research, connected with
the activity of the Department of History of Education of the Higher Pedagogical School in
Rzeszów (since 2001 the University of Rzeszów). Throughout the years, its employees were
Professors: Julian Dybiec, Józef Grzywna, Andrzej Meissner, Czesław Majorek, Jerzy Potoczny,
and Bogdan Stuparik. Employees with Doctoral degrees in Humanities were: Czesław Płaza,
Adam Horbowski, and Władysława Szulakiewicz. At present, the staff of the Department
is formed by: Prof. Kazimierz Szmyd, Dr. Ewa Barnaś and Dr. Elżbieta Dolata. The main
direction of research conducted by the historians of education in Rzeszów is the local history
of education and the history of schools and pedagogical thought in Galicia. The latter issue
has become the subject of bibliographic works, monographs, collaborative works published
in the series Galicja i jej dziedzictwo (Galicia and its heritage), articles and essays, as well as
dictionary entries and entries in specialist encyclopaedias. | en_EN |
