A series of zirconia toughened alumina ceramics (ZTA) of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ having different forms and amounts of $ZrO_2$ (unstabilized monoclinic $ZrO_2^{(m)}$, partially stabilized $ZrO_2$ with $Y_2O_3$) and composites type $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2–TiC$ were tested. $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ composites with zirconia stabilized (ZY5) and $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2–TiC$ composites with addition of nanopowders are characterized by the best mechanical properties. These composites give the greater wear resistance, transverse rupture strength (even about 80%), durability of cutting edge and the better toughness at the same hardness, in comparison with pure $Al_2O_3$ ceramics.en
