The 19th century was the age of great development of press in general and
in Polish teritories as well. Even though the Russian partition territory residents
contributed the most, it was Galicia that was somehow exceptional in
that matter. The press-creating process was dominated, which should come
as no surprise, the residents of Cracow and of the capital – Lviv. Nevertheless,
the activity of the provincial Galicia should not be underestimated. For
those regions, local newspapers were on the one hand a substitute of the great
“Austro-Hungarian world” and on the other hand defined their local identity.
Now, regional periodicals not only the involvement of then provincials in the
intellectual sphere, but most importantly become magnificent and vast material
for research. Even though those sources are usually scattered and hard
to obtain, it is still impossible to conduct microhistoric research without the
use of provincial press.
