Structural steels hardened to martensite and then tempered to obtain the same hardness
have very similar mechanical properties. It is possible to replace steel containing expensive
alloying elements with cheaper ones. The conditions are as follows: the cheaper and the
replaced steels need to have the same abilities to harden and comparable decrease in
hardness due to tempering. The aim of this study was to analyze the possibility of replacing
or reducing the content of molybdenum in cast steel GS35MnSiMo 5-3-3 (L35GSM) without
changing the mechanical properties. To compare the ideal critical diameter of steels, the
generally accepted Grossmann method has been used, to compare the decrease in hardness
by tempering – diagrams developed by Wellauer. The cast steel GS35MnSiMo 5-3-3 (L35GSM)
contains 0,3–0,4% Mo; in the proposed solution Mo content is lowered to 0,1–0,2%, while the
increase in hardenability is assured by adding 0,3–0,4% of Cr.
