Efficiency of a firearm depends on both ammunition and a type of a gun. Bullets differ in
calibre and framework. The core of a bullet destructive impact is the way of energy transfers
and its distribution in the material. It is also connected with the framework of bullets. The
range of influence also depends on material features. This paper presents descriptions of
conducted shooting experiments. Three types of guns and five types of bullets were used.
Target plates made of steel (structural and tool) were used. Three states of hardening of the
tool steel were applied – deliver, soft and post hardening states. The tests were focused on
places of bullets’ impact. The bullets that have not been destroyed and the structure of nonused
bullets were tested as well. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
were used to test the structure and chemical composition of specimens. Geometric quantities
were also examined. The results of the tests proved that the higher bullet impact resistance
features the tool steel in the deliver state. Structural steel is weaker then tool steel in a soft
state. Not only the energy but also the framework of a bullet had the influence on a rate of
penetration of the materials.
