The paper deals with the controversial issue of the existence or otherwise of the Silesian
nation. The dispute over the status of the Silesians has at least three dimensions: historical,
psychological and legal one. The paper presents historical reasons for the emergence and
consolidation of the separate Silesian identity in Upper Silesia. The analysis of psychological
aspects of Silesian nationhood leads to the conclusion that an ethnic group does not need
external recognition to be convinced of itself being a legitimate nation. History shows that
many self-proclaimed nations existed despite the lack of recognition from the dominant
nation in their country. The legal status extends rights and privileges of the nation but it is
not a prerequisite for its existence.
