Przekonanie o tym, że tekst Biblijny jest Słowem Bożym zobowiązywało do skrupulatnej dbałości o wierny przekaz. Uczeni żydowscy zwani masoretami opracowali system akcentów i samogłosek dla tekstów Biblii hebrajskiej. W ich kręgu zainteresowania leżała także troska o to by nic nie uległo zmianie w zapisie świętych tekstów.
