dc.description.abstract | The autor addresses the question as to what extent Antiochus IV Epiphanes directly participated in the persecution
of the Jews, with the intention to Hellenize them. The dispute over the number of visits this ruler made to
Jerusalem is of no small importance in this matter. The only source clearly indicating that Antioch twice came to
Jerusalem is Josephus' Antiquitates Judaicae. The evidence that can be derived from the Book of Maccabees and the
Book of Daniel is unclear. Not even a precise analysis of the sources, or the history of Epiphanes’ Egyptian
campaign in 169-168 B.C., can give a convincing resolution of the problem. | en_EN |
