The west wing of the Nida trough is built of chalk rocks differentiated petrographically and varying in paint of strength. A selective destruction of monoclinally lying rocks had for result the formation of structural steps. In the main they are builet on senonic marls. However, paarallel structural steps are known to occur locally on turonian lime- stones and on albonian sandstones. The here described chalk steps extend from Krasice on the Warta in a gener l S.W. direction as far as the latitudinal bend of the upper Pilica. Their structure is discontinued its short sections being separated by broad depressions mostly on transversal tectonic lines. The height of the steps is not great, scarcely reaching a few metres, only locally exceeding 20 m, and the inclination of slopes is of several degreesen_EN
