The author presents the processes of industrialization, their rate and spacial differentiation in some selected
centers, against the background of industrialization processes of the whole Southern Poland area. The examined
processes have certain features in common, highly significant within the proces of industralization of the country
in general and of the South of Poland in particular. These common features are, above all: a more rapid growth of
industry than of the other branches of national economy, and a more rapid growth of the processing industry than of
the mining industry.
The region of Southern Poland had a number of specific features within its industrialization process, namely the
rate Of industrial growth in this part of the country was higher that the all-Poland average, as was also the
employment index within the industry of the means of production (17 per cent).
Against the background of the geneml regularities in the industrial development of Southern Poland, the author has
examined in detail the processes of growth of production and its concentration in seven major industrial centers,
of which as many as five are situated in the external zone of the Upper-Silesia Industrial District. These ware:
two coal-mining industrial centers at Jaworzno and Jastrzębie, the Bielsko textile and metal industry center, the
Raciborz metal and food industry center and the metallurgical industry center at Częstochowa.
Outside the Upper-Silesia Industrial District the author examined two centers, the steel and power center at
Skawina, and the sulphur industry center at Tarnobrzeg.
In the chosen centers the author has presented the industrial eolution which took place between 1938 and 1965, the
changes in the branch and economic structure, and the respective importance of these industrial centers for the
region as well as for the whole country.
