The article is an attempt at an analysis of compound sentences where the second propositional component does not refer either to the nominal or to the adverbal element but refers to the whole first propositional component. Because of the way in which the two components are welded together the second component is a relative clause added by means of the relative pronoun чтo in combination with the preposition proper and adverbial pronouns как, откуда. In the article the author defines the position of relative clauses with in the system of compound constructions, points out their grammatical nd syntactic properties which difier them both from the typical hypotactic constructions and from those of the paratactic ones where the second clause begins with a paratactic conjunction combined with the indicative pronoun это. The semantic layer of relative clauses depends on the connecting indicator. In scholarly language this type of relative clauses does not bring into it any additional semantic shade. There is a numerous group of reference clauses when somebody or something are mentioned or referred to. A fairly large group consists of clauses which contain the author’s opinion or judgment on the action or situation presented in the first component of the sentence. An equally numerous group consists of relative clauses of comparative and resulting character. On the other hand, relative clauses of purpose are much less numerous. Relevant is the word order of relative clauses. The second component always follows the first which is a natural result of the specific nature of this kind of relative clauses. In case if the relative clause is inserted within the main clause, its intonation will be assimilated to that of the initial clause. The article ends up with numerical data and their statistical analysis.en_EN
