| dc.description.abstract | In 1961 57. 1 p. c. of the over-all number of adolescents of secondary-school age of the region were living in the
country. Pupils of peasant origin constituted only 43. 2 p. c. of the secondary-school pupils. Their attendance at
the particular types of these schools was highly differentiated. Thus, while in secondary schools of general
education, the “lycées", the number of boys and girls of peasant origin amounted hardly to 27. 7 p. c. of the over-
all number of students, and in professional secondary schools to 41. 8 p. c., in the lower vocational schools the
number of pupils from the country grew to 59. 3 p. c. of the over-all number. It should be noted that the situation
of young people of peasant origin when compared to those from the town was markedly unfavourable. This refers both
to the fact that post-elementary education is less common among the young peasants, and to the fact that the
prevailing type of school attended by them is of lower grade, upon finishing which they are not entitled to apply
for admission to a school of higher education, a university or college.
Lacking for the causes of this situation, the author has examined the territorial accessibility of secondary schools
for pupils from the country, and the number of boarding-schools available to them. As sometimes the students are
compelled to travel every day to secondary schools located in distant towns, and the number of vacant places in the
boarding-schools is still unsatisfactory, all this combines to make the situation of the peasant boys and girls
desirous to continue their education at secondary school much more difficult, when compared to that of their
