In the paper N.Polevoy’s role in the development of Russian periodical press in the eighteen twenties — eighteen
thirties is discussed on the basis of the materials contained in the most prominent journal of this period — „The
Moscow Telegraph”.
Nicolas Polevoy’s journal was modelled upon West European examples. It included a lot of literatury criticism and
information about new books. These aimed, as well as the reviews of literary almanacs, at finding some valuable
items among the crowd of second-rate, epigonus work.
Polevoy’s appreciation of literary achievement was based upon the principles of Romantic aesthetics as well as upon
national and historical criteria. Comparing the Russian and European literature he on the one hand pointed out the
national character of the former, on the second hand — indicated the necessity of its connections with Europe.
The journal was the first in Russia to introduce a periodical review of magazines and newspapers which became a
kind of chronicle, rich in valuable material for the history of the Russian press.
Thus N.Polevoy created a model of the Russian encyclopaedic journal on a European level.
