The paper discusses the Russian and Soviet linguists’ changing from year-to-year views upon the phenomenon of the Russian sentence intonation. In linguistic literature no one generally accepted conception of this phenomenon can be found. Therefore the author of the paper tries to answer the following questions: 1) how the views on the essence of intonation, its importance and functions in the process of the linguistic communication were formed; 2) what changes did the interpretation of the physical traits of intonation undergo together with the development of the methodology of investigation? The author concludes that the most comprehensive and mature conception of the Russian sentence intonation can be found in Bryzgunova’s theory, which contains the classification of the different types of Russian intonation.en_EN
