In spite of ancient exploring tradition, vast resources and high qualities of the natural environment in Mongolia
are still not recognized well enough. A rapid development of earth sciences as well as reasonable utilization of
the natural resources necessitate an intensification of scientific research. One of the ways for closer recognition
the Mongolia geographical environment was Mongolian-Polish Physical-Geographical Expedition „Transmongolia”, based
on the 1976 agreement between Institute for Geography of Polish Academy of Science and Institute for Geography and
Permafrosting of Mongolian Academy of Science.
The expedition aimed at recognizing the natural environment in Mongolia within various climatic and flora zones as
closely and as widely as possible. In order to perform this job, the co-operating Institutes concentrated their
efforts for several exploration seasons on the transsect cutting Mongolia from north-west south-eastward (fig. 1).
In its central section, the transsect cuts the Chentej mountains. The exploration manager of „Transmongolia”
Mongolian-Polish Expedition was Assistant Professor dr Kazimierz Klimek.
In summer 1977 explorations were carried out in the eastern Chentej in the Sugnugurin-gol basin by an exploration
group Chentej I called by the Institute for Geography and Spatial Arrangement of Polish Academy of Science with the
participation of the Institute for Geography of the „National Education Committee Pedagogical College”. The group
manager was Assistant Professor dr Tadeusz Ziętara. These annals show preliminary exploration results. Further
results will be published in joint or problem and individual papers.
