The subject matter of the article is a functional interpretation of a medieval text of a sermon as a communicative
act, which is targeted at the evaluation of a semantic and syntactic-stylistic correctness of the contemporary
Polish. The author analyses the rhetoric construction of the sermon, multi-layer text structure, sender-recipient
relation, descriptive narration method in the target language with the inclusion of dialogue in the general
narrative sequence, and meta-relationships with the parenthesis function. Subsequently, the semantic mechanism of
cohesion based on the simple and complex sentence structure with rhetorical figures is analysed. As a result, the
coherence of the text of the sermon (written by a priest as a model to be preached from the pulpit and to be
expanded) is confirmed. The sermon deals with the consideration of God's love in the context of Song of Songs by
Salomon (in Polish), organised according to the principle of logic, and (in Latin) the story of Saint Catherine’s
life lived upon Jesus, son of God’s teaching and deserving such love. The functional structure of the text is
perfectly justified and the verbal aspect of the sermon conforms to the norms of the Polish language.
