The input of representatives of various disciplines and fields of study in creating logopedic ideas is reflected in
the subject literature by the terminological variety and diverse sets of criteria, based on which categorisation of
speech, voice, hearing, reading and writing distortions is conducted.
The logopedic terminology originating from the fringes of the discipline (phoniatrics), clinical psychology and
child psychology demands a separate set of criteria (aspects, sub-categories) such as: etiology (causes),
patomechanism, symptoms of speech distortions and others. Distortions and disturbances of speech can be further
divided according to various (sub)types, for example: a. kind, b. extent, c. depth, d. dynamics, and the like.
Depending on the fact whether a given phenomenon is analysed by a physician, linguist or psychologist, each of them
pays attention to a different aspect of the problem. The physician mainly concentrates on the causes (etiology) and
mechanisms of creating distortions (patomechanisms); the linguist focuses on their linguistic symptoms and
consequences for the communication process; the psychologist is interested in the links between other areas of
development and effects in the emotional and social functions of the child - pupil (patient) with speech
disturbances. These phenomena are evident in the choice of criteria adopted for the categorisation of logopedic
problems by the specialists.
