The paper prepared on the basis of hand-written letters of Zofia Kraszewska addressed to her husband, Józef Ignacy, is the author’s next publication of 19th century epistolography. The paper is an introduction to planned by the author on a much larger scale study over Polish family language of the past centuries. Characterization of this informal variety of Polish must be started with description of linguistic practices of women fulfilling different social roles and simultaneously usually focusing a household’s attention on themselves. The author is guided by such a perspective when through the prism of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, syntactic structures, and polite expressions used by Kraszewska he convinces of inseparable relations between the borderland nobility’s tradition and outlook on life and variable political, economical, and cultural realities in which women lived in the 19th century.en_EN
