Lexical borrowings from the Turkish language are the most numerous in Bulgarian dialects, both in common parlance and in cant. The paper concerns Turkish borrowings in the dialect of the Ruse town in the early part of the 19th century. The basis of the analysis is a manuscript of Ticho Obretenov’s private trade notebook. Ticho Obretenov was one of well known personages of the Ruse town in those days. The text that is a collection of private notes shows a perfect image of contemporary colloquial language because Ticho Obretenov wrote in the way he spoke. The author’s description refers to the part of the notebook that includes ample trade terminology (Obretenov was both a tailor and a tradesman). It is also important that the notebook shows briefly and precisely (with giving the exact dates) fragments of everyday life of one of well known Bulgarian families.
