The paper brings a description of structures and functions of titles of scientific papers. Linguistic material are excerpts from the periodical "Polonica" (vol. I-XXIV/XXV) published since 1975 by the Institute of Polish Language belonging to the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow. Titles, occurring directly after the surnames of the authors and typographically distinguished from texts of papers, fulfill delimitative and informative functions first of all. They are the shortest summaries of papers. They also represent the texts outside. Titles of papers in "Polonica" arc different in respect of the length, they consist of one to twenty three words (the most often 6 -8 words). The level of complexity depends on minuteness of detail of a subject. Sentence words dominate, decided majority of indicative structures, exceptionally interrogative ones. Together with a strong tendency to unconventional character recurrence of definite wording can be seen. Titles confirm typical for scientific style outer form of contacts between the sender and the receiver. Filling titles with foreign words, with both universal scientific and linguistic terminology is typical. Considering the subject matter nouns occur more frequently than other lexical items: analiza (analysis), interpretacja (interpretation), jednostka (item), nazwa (name), struktura (structure), system (system), tekst (text), typ (type), where język (language) is used the most frequently; from among terms naming parts of speech czasownik (verb) and przymiotnik (adjective) are met the most often and from among adjectives polski (Polish) as well as językowy (linguistic), leksykalny (lexical), semantyczny (semantic), and składniowy (syntactic) are frequent. The vocabulary reflects a special character of "Polonica" - a yearly publication assuming papers considering synchronous description of the Polish language will predominate.en_EN
