The article aims at presenting one of possible interpretations of autobiographism in the new Polish prose. It
does not contain detailed analyses of particular novels but it focuses on the very interpretative device, namely
the category of autobiography perceived from the ‘postmodernist’ point of view. This category, which has
functioned so far in the non-fiction literature, is becoming the basis for fiction for the writers making their
debut after the year 1989. Aesthetic colouring of everyday reality, fiction, auto-creation and specific
‘directing’ are possible here thanks to ‘textualisation.’ The author points out to the relationship of this kind
of writer’s attitude towards himself with the recently described aesthetics of the ‘camp’ (Susan Sontag). He also
pays attention to the links between the contemporary novel and the column aesthetics. Thus the category of
autobiographism, which has been traditionally treated as a test of ‘anti-fictionality’ of the novel returns to
the writing as a chance to preserve its fictionality. The author combines this tendency with the growing self-
awareness of writers first of all as ‘recreators’ and not only creators. Thus the shift in the comprehension of
autobiographism signals a different placement of literature both in the culture and social life.
