The critical perception of Manuela Gretkowska’ prose was limited to its superficial aspects, that is her social,
artistic and stylistic provocations, which made it harder or even impossible to reach for deeper senses and for
the fundamental artistic proposal, which distinguishes her prose from others against the background of Polish
literary traditions. First of all, it is the creation of protagonists not in the context of history, social
issues and psychology but biological and cultural anthropology. From the biological point of view, the man is a
product of evolution who is subject to the demands of his body and the rules of nature; from the perspective of
culture the man is the creator of whole systems of myths, symbols, beliefs, related customs, individual ways of
thinking and feeling, and finally various disciplines of art. Gretkowska’s prose, because of its different
perspective on the man, on the stylistic achievements and intellectual contexts is distinguished against the
literary output of her contemporaries.
