Kazimierz Brandys’s literary output was widely commented on by critics during the communist period in Poland. The
amplitudę among critical voices was considerable. Brandys’s novel Obywatele attracted particular attention of
contemporary literary criticism for two reasons. Firstly, Polish literaturę of that period could boast of a piece
of work partially departing from the pattem of plain production novel, at least apparently. It was Brandys who was
praised for that achievement. However, praise hymns were hastily cancelled when Poland was flooded with October
Thaw. Mother of Kings, on the other hand, as a work criticising the communist procedures, immediately faced the
accusation of opportunist practices of the writer, who used to be so cherished by the same authorities. Both cases
constitute an interesting example, and seem to illustrate the course of mutual dependencies within the writer -
literary criticism - authorities relationship.
