Abstract

The author attempts to demonstrate the change in the function of literary criticism against the background of widespread commercialization of culture. The change consists in departing from the interpretation of a certain hermeneutic conduct and from the process of discover- ing senses to standard reviewing activities and approaching the area of public relations and advertising. Contemporary criticism is either a variety of journalism or a direct form of image creation (image of a book, publishing house or an author). The author of the article suggests an opinion that criticism depends on a piece of work, which is actually the object of criticism. If art denounces referentiality, should the criticism of art use language based on reference? Should perhaps, the piece of art be sent to an area which it itself is not willing to be found in. Should we find contexts for it which are not in any way valid, asks the author.
