The Krosno district exhibits a great variety of landscape types and natural peculiarities. There are numerous well
preserved primeval biocenoses. The occurrence of variously shaped sandstone tors is a typical feature of mountain
ridges and near ridges areas. The climate of the Krosno district is related to the directions of the Krosno
district is related to the directions of mountain ridges and intramountainous depressions. Strong south winds (so
called „Dukla winds” or „Rymanów winds”) are typical of the Krosno district.
The pollution of environment caused by urbanization and industrialization is low. Sulphur dioxide is the most
important component of pollution emitted by industrial plants which causes the threat for the environment. The
emission of dust (mostly produced during combustion of solid fuels) is also high. During the last decade the
tendency of decrease of local emission of gazous pollutants and dust was noted. The decrease of emission is not
correlated with the decrease of concentration of sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere. The concentration of sulphur
dioxide in the atmosphere is related probably to long-range transport from Slovakia.
On the surfaces of sandstone tors only traces of destructive action of air pollution were recognized. Rock surfaces
are often covered by layers of microbiological origin. Secondary minerals (e.g. gypsum) or concentration of
elements which can be related to atmospheric pollution were found only on a few samples.
