According to the author, the main causes of the contemporary reforms of higher education
can be traced back to the spread of neoliberal ideas, decrease in state’s participation in financing
tertiary education with the public money, and the needs of information society. The 1990s
restructuring of academic education aimed at its vocationalization. Neoliberal tendencies were
directed towards the marketization of higher education, focusing on efficiency, economic value
and the “product” quality, as well as towards establishing new relations between students and
academic teachers, as clients and vendors.
Having described in detail challenges that higher education faces nowadays, the
author discusses alternatives to the present tendencies of marketization, productization and
globalization. In the conclusion, the author presents his predictions concerning potential
changes in tertiary education in the nearest future.
