dc.description.abstract | The result of thematic and pedagogical teacher-training offered by the Cracow Higher School
of Pedagogy, established in 1946, was the guarantee that history of education had it proper
place in all study courses; later it was taught only in pedagogy and special pedagogy. The first
lecturer of history of education, employed in 1946, was Doctor Wanda Bobkowska from the
Jagiellonian University. Full-time-employed historians of education started work in the chair
of Polish History, established on October 1, 1953, whose head since October 1, 1955 was
Associate Professor Ignacy Zarębski, a historian of education. The second full-time historian
of education, Zygmunt Ruta, was employed in 1959, and the third, Dr. Wincenty Spiechowicz,
in 1961. In 1972, Department of History of Education and Upbringing was established within
the Institute of History. In 1976 it was divided and moved to the Institute of Pedagogy, where
it functioned until 1982, when the institute was dissolved. On January 1, 1982, the Department
was renamed as the Chair of History of Education, an independent scientific and didactic unit,
functioning in the structure of the Faculty of Humanities, and since 1992 – in the Faculty of
Pedagogy.
Since the transfer to the Faculty of Pedagogy, academic teachers of the Chair conduct classes
in history of education, history of pedagogical thought, history of special education, history of
physical education and sport, comparative pedagogy, comparative pedagogy of educational
systems, European education, EU educational programmes, and occasionally in Polish history,
history didactics, civil education didactics, and history of science. The Chair also conducts
two post-graduate courses: organization and management of education, and vocational
counselling.
The Chair’s academic teachers belong or belonged to: International Standing Conference
for the History of Education /ISCHE/, Comparative Education Society in Europe /CESE/,
Towarzystwo Historii Edukacji (History of Education Society), etc.
In the Pedagogical University of Cracow, history of education is practised as a science by
specialized historians of education, teachers of other units on the margin of their discipline,
and particular subjects pedagogues. The most frequently examined topic is pedagogical
practice, less frequently examined – pedagogical theory, and only occasionally – modern
pedagogical theories.
The effect of research is promotion of master theses, doctoral dissertations, reviewing
doctoral and habilitation works, and participating in promotion committees. Most often the
supervisors of master theses were Professor Zygmunt Ruta, Professor Czesław Majorek,
and Professor Jan Krakowski. They were also participants of doctoral procedures; Professor
Ruta and Professor Majorek also participated in habilitation procedures and in evaluation of
achievements of professorship candidates. | en_EN |
