In general there are at least two zones in the wall cross section of solidifying metal:
an external solid layer and an internal zone that contains crystals and liquid phase (mushy
zone). Crystal boundaries being in contact with liquid forms a nuclei of cracks. Development
of crack consists in separation of crystals along their boundaries. Presence of liquid phase
makes energy needed to develop of nuclei lower and process of increasing of crack dimensions
quicker. So, brittleness of metal is caused by presence of liquid. Manifestation of brittleness
can be described by violent reduction of deformation time to failure. At temperature at which
presence of liquid ends in solidifying metal plastic temperature range starts.
