Nowadays, Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) has great influence on the success of the
peacekeeping operations. Stabilization and reconstruction of Iraq was a big challenge for the
CIMIC personnel. They were people whose work and commitment were to create a positive
image of the Polish army and to convince the Iraqis that the soldiers had come to their country
with the message of peace.
Polish officers responsible for Civil Military Cooperation pursued a wide range of tasks in
many areas, such as education, health service, economic development, law, public safety,
telecommunication, road-works and utilities, or veterinary and public transport. The CIMIC
centres were very important to the functioning of CIMIC. In Iraq, the CIMIC centre was the
Humanitarian Assistance Coordination Centre (HACC). It operated within the area of the
Polish division.
HACC was the main place to contact local inhabitants, the representatives of the local
government and humanitarian organizations. Numerous humanitarian projects were
undertaken to rebuild the country and to improve the Iraqi’s situation.
The CIMIC personnel’s activity was invaluable not only to create a friendly environment for
operations of the allied armies, but also to the Iraqi people.
