Dreaming of love : the evolution of the courtly love theme in the dream poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer and the Scottish Chaucerians

Abstract

Rozprawa doktorska poddaje literackiej analizie problem miłości dworskiej (courtly love) w wizjach sennych Geoffreya Chaucera oraz jego następców - piętnastowiecznych poetów szkockich: króla Jakuba I, Roberta Henrysona, Williama Dunbara oraz Gavina Douglasa.

Analizie poddane zostały następujące utwory: Le Roman de la Rose ("Powieść o róży") oraz jego angielskie tłumaczenie; The Book of the Duchess ("Księga księżnej"); The House of Fame ("Gmach sławy"); The Legend of Good Women ("Legenda o dobrych kobietach"); The Parliament of Fowls ("Ptasi parlament") oraz Troilus and Criseyde ("Troilus i Criseyda"). Spośród szkockich utworów do analizy wybrane zostały: The Kingis Quair ("Księga królewska") napisana przez Jakuba I, The Goldyn Targe ("Złota tarcza") oraz The Thrissill and the Rois ("Oset i róża") autorstwa Williama Dunbara, The Palis of ("Pałac honoru") Gavina Douglasa oraz - w mniejszym stopniu - jego Eneados, a także The Testament of Cresseid ("Testament Kressydy") pióra Roberta Henrysona.

Zasadą strukturalną pracy jest paralelizm wątków: utwory szkockie zostały zestawione z angielskimi w oparciu o wybrane, powtarzające się w nich motywy, takie jak: konflikt miłości z rozsądkiem, motyw więźnia miłości, sławy, wspólnego dobra oraz "choroby z miłości." Motywy te stanowią część składową tematu przewodniego - miłości dworskiej - oraz stanowią wspólny mianownik dla utworów poddanych analizie.

Przeprowadzone analizy wykazały, że obraz miłości ukazany w poezji Chaucera różni się znacznie od tego, który dominuje w utworach jego szkockich następców. Szkocka poezja nie ukazuje miłości ziemskiej - podobnie jak całej ludzkiej egzystencji - jako marności, lecz jako wartość samą w sobie, przez co traci średniowieczny charakter i staje się bliższa humanistycznemu spojrzeniu na świat.

The dissertation examines the literary representation of courtly love in the dream poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer and his Scottish followers: James I, Robert Henryson, William Dunbar, and Gavin Douglas. Works selected for analysis include: the Roman de la Rose (together with the English translation of the French poem), The Book of the Duchess and Chaucer's Boethian poems, The House of Fame, The Legend of Good Women, The Parliament of Fowls and Troilus and Criseyde. On the Scottish side, the following works are discussed: James I's The Kingis Quair, Dunbar's The Goldyn Targe and The Thrissill and the Rois, Douglas's The Palis of Honoure (and, to a lesser extent, The Eneados) and Henryson's The Testament of Cresseid.

The Scottish poems were collated with Chaucer's according to a few motifs which are the constituent parts of the theme of courtly love: the allegorical battle between love and reason; the 'prisoner of love'; good reputation; 'commune profit'; and the disease of love.

The analyses of English and Scottish dream poetry reveal that the conception of love changed significantly when it was transmitted from English to Scottish culture. The fifteenth-century Scottish followers of Chaucer created a new conception of worldly love, which is not irreconcilable with Christian morality. In their dream poems they - more than their master. Geoffrey Chaucer - validated the human experience on earth which to a great extent referred precisely to the experience of love. In this way they considerably influenced the introduction of the new ideas about man and the world which soon became characteristic of the Renaissance outlook.
