The first part of the article discusses technical education in Poland in the end of the 19th
century. Next, it focuses on the model of Scandinavian slojd whose role in the process of
education in Galician schools was significant, though not all the models of Swedish wood slojd
were suitable for Polish needs. What was very important in a slojd handwork education were
the development of dexterity and the ability to use tools. In the further part of the article the
discussion focuses on the division of handwork education in the interwar period onto four
stages. The article also shows how the National Institute of Manual Work, which is inseparably
connected with engineer Władysław Przanowski, came into being.
