Abstract

The article attempts to assess the activity of the artistic circles of Upper Silesia in the period of the People’s Republic of Poland. The author presents the elements distinguishing the reality of Upper Silesia in comparison with the situation nationwide. The so-called period of the People’s Republic of Poland (years 1944–1989) is divided into stages with internal caesuras. The author attempts to present the characteristics of the distinguished sub-periods, describing specific examples of the opportunities and threats mentioned in the title and experienced by artists in Upper Silesia. Describing the activity of artists, the author cites specific examples of representatives of the Upper Silesian environment. In addition to the description of events, the author also tries to explain the circumstances giving rise to the increase or decrease of the role of artists in creating the socio-political situation in the country and the region.
