In his paper the author describes a didactic experiment that had a form of a classroom debate. The debate referred
to a judgement of the Polish King Stanisław August Poniatowski and it took place at secondary school. Such a debate
should be considered as a derivative (derivatively functionalized) genre that joins some features of a modern
political debate and a trial as well as a critical and polemical discussion about historical subjects. It is
a special recontextualization of a historical (popularized scientific) discourse for the needs of teaching history
and Polish language and literature. It is also useful for linguistic etiquette, kindness and courtesy. From a
typical political (public) debate a classroom debate takes some organizational rules (e.g. one precisely specified
controversial issue, exactly stated rules for turn-taking, a neutral person who manages the discussion). Didactic
efficiency of a classroom debate depends mainly on clear and brief formulating the issue, best of all, if possible,
in a form of a short decisive question.
