Teoria reprezentacjonizmu w filozofii percepcji Tylera Burge'a

Abstract

Celem nadrzędnym niniejszej rozprawy jest krytyczne omówienie teorii reprezentacjonizm u współczesnego amerykańskiego filozofa, Tylera Burge'a (ur. 1946), znanego z licznych prac o dużym znaczeniu dla filozofii języka, filozofii umysłu oraz filozofii percepcji, a także o pewnym wkładzie do współczesnej epistemologii i filozofii nauki. To, co określam "teorią reprezentacjonizmu Burge'a" nie stanowi treści jednego, większego dzieła, a raczej tworzą ją poszczególne zagadnienia i wątki poruszane przez niego w wielu pracach przede wszystkim z zakresu filozofii umysłu i filozofii percepcji. Tym samym, mojej pracy nie należy rozumieć jako monografii mimo względnie szeroko uwzględnionej w niej literatury podmiotowej Burge'a, ale jako ramy odniesienia do dyskusji na temat aktualnych problemów filozofii percepcji, a także wybranych zagadnień filozofii umysłu oraz epistemologii. Główna teza mojej dysertacji wskazuje na dwie kwestie: (1) wewnętrzną niekoherentność teorii reprezentacjonizmu Burge'a, która wynika - najogólniej mówiąc - z połączenia elementów wyjaśnienia realistycznego i konstruktywistycznego w odniesieniu do tych samych kwestii i pod tym samym względem; oraz (2) krytykę wybranych przeze mnie zarówno ogólnych, jak i szczegółowych elementów naukowo-filozoficznego wyjaśnienia dotyczących zjawiska spostrzegania zmysłowego proponowanych w modelu obliczeniowo-konstruktywistycznym.

The primary aim of this dissertation is to critically discuss the theory of representationalism of the contemporary American philosopher, Tyler Burge (b. 1946), known for his numerous works of great importance for the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of perception, as well as some contributions to contemporary epistemology and philosophy of science. What I call "Burge's theory of representationalism" is not the content of a single, larger work, but rather it is made up of individual issues and themes raised by him in many works, primarily in the field of philosophy of mind and philosophy of perception. Thus, my work should not be understood as a monograph, despite the relatively extensive coverage of Burge's subject literature, but as a frame of reference for the discussion of current problems of the philosophy of perception, as well as selected issues of the philosophy of mind and epistemology. The main thesis of my dissertation points to two issues: (1) the intrinsic incoherence of Burge's theory of representationalism, which arises, broadly speaking, from the combination of elements of realist and constructivist explanation with respect to the same issues and in the same respect and (2) a critique of the selected general and specific elements of the scientific-philosophical explanation concerning the phenomenon of sensory perception proposed in the computational model.
