Na granicach dwóch kontynentów: Franko-Amerykanie i ich tożsamość

Abstract

W artykule podjęta zostaje próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak potomkowie francuskich imigrantów akcentują własną kulturową i narodową odmienność. Autor analizuje niektóre przykłady użycia języka będącego, jak wiadomo, jednym z kluczowych kryteriów tożsamości. Pierwsza część artykułu dotyczy kontekstu francusko- -amerykańskiego. Autor wyjaśnia w niej, dlaczego tak duże grupy populacji znalazły się na terytorium USA i Kanady oraz skąd pochodzą. Druga część przedstawia dane ilościowe, takie jak liczba Franko-Amerykanów w różnych stanach i miastach czy też ilość ludności francuskojęzycznej, podczas gdy ostatnia część koncentruje się na sposobach użycia języka francuskiego, zarówno w organizacjach, jak i w stowarzyszeniach związanych z językiem i kulturą francuską.

The article “At the Borders of Two Continents: Franco-Americans and Their Cultural Identity” is an attempt to answer the question of how the descendants of French immigrants emphasize their cultural and national difference. The author of the article conducts an analysis on the basis of her knowledge about the examples of language use which constitutes one of the identity criterion. The first part of the article deals with the Franco-Americans background. It explains how such a large population group has been found on the territory of the USA and Canada, where they came from. The second part refers to the presented statistics, the amount of Franco-Americans in different states and cities, the number of population speaking French, while the last part concentrates on the ways of French language usage, equally in organisations and associations especially concerned with French language and culture.
