The Postcolonial Perspective in the Study of Polish History: Concluding Remarks

Abstract

The article provides a synopsis of the main themes of the conference “The Postcolonial Per-spective in the Study of Polish History: Benefits, Challenges, Potential,” which took place at the University of the National Education Commission in Kraków on October 23–25, 2024. It as-sesses the presentations against research agenda as set out by the keynote presentation of Lenny A. Ureña Valerio. The agenda outlined four key areas of development for the postcolonial per-spective in Polish history: (1) histories of migration; (2) environmental history; (3) miscegena-tion and the limits of Polish homogeneity; and (4) intersectionality incorporating race, gender, and class. The article argues that while the conference did partially answer the research agenda, it did not do so fully, and that there remains scope for further development and refining of the postcolonial perspective in Polish history. This includes the need to recognize the limits of the approach.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi podsumowanie najważniejszych wniosków z referatów przedstawionych na konferencji „Perspektywa postkolonialna w badaniach nad historią Polski: korzyści, wyzwania, potencjał” zorganizowanej w Uniwersytecie Komisji Edukacji Narodowej w Krakowie w dniach 23–25 października 2024 r. Ocenia się w nim referaty w kontekście programu badawczego określonego w prezentacji Lenny A. Ureña Valerio. Program ten nakreślił cztery kluczowe obszary rozwoju perspektywy postkolonialnej w historii Polski: (1) historie migracji; (2) historia środowiskowa; (3) krzyżowanie ras i kontury polskiej jednorodności; oraz (4) interseksjonalność obejmująca rasę, płeć i klasę. W artykule dowodzi się, że chociaż konferencja częściowo odpowiedziała na program badawczy, nie zrobiła tego w pełni i że nadal istnieje pole do dalszego rozwoju i udoskonalenia perspektywy postkolonialnej w historii Polski. Obejmuje to potrzebę rozpoznania ograniczeń podejścia postkolonialnego.
