The impressive ways of everyday life, vast plantations, and beautiful English-style
houses, played an important role in the process of shaping and strengthening of the
Virginia elite in the eighteenth century. The article characterises the transformation
of plantations and residences of the wealthiest Virginians, pointing at the relevance
of changes in agriculture to their life style, and the significance of so called consumer
revolution around the middle of the century, and some fresh architectural designs
from England and the new capital of Virginia.
