Immediately after Hitler assumed power, German Jews faced rising anti-Semitism and constant harassment. Newly introduced legislature stripped Jews of their basic rights and excluded them from civil society. For half a million Jews living in Germany tradition, religion and community became extremely important. Celebration of Jewish holidays and participation in religious services meant return to the roots, to tradition, and to Jewish faith and community. Impoverishment, mass emigration, difficulties in obtaining kosher food and restrictions on the purchase of basic food items constituted an additional problem and finally, the destruction of most of the synagogues during the pogrom of November 9,1938 influenced the religious life of German Jews.en
