Author analyses sources showing medieval monastery as a place of living for monks.
The issue of ‘household space’ is described in regards to the monastery of Ordo S.
Sepulchri in Miechów mentioned in many sources. Writer describes also small monasteries
of the same order, provostries in Stradom near Kraków, in suburbs of Bytom
and in Żarnowiec. In second half of XIV century the monastery in Miechów contained
bedrooms, refectory, kitchen and other buildings. In the next century were added
bedrooms for winter and summer time, room for ill, hall near refectory and basement.
The square building contained two floors. Separate living area was designated for a
provost. Brewery, school, bathroom were also available in the area of monastery. The
monastery in Stradom had also separate house for provost and separate for monks.
There were also buildings of a similar purpose as in Miechów. Ordo S. Sepulchri headquarters
in Bytom and Żarnowiec were simple, wooden houses containing porch,
kitchen and two rooms. Author also mentions sources about furnishings (ovens, furniture,
clocks, etc.).
