The present paper is an attempt to present the issue of burgher townhouse and urban
dwelling. The article stressed research problems related with recognition of Late
Mediaeval and Early Modern architecture of a burgher house in small Lesser Poland
towns. As an example served 4 towns: Chrzanów, Grybów, Stary Sącz i Czeladź. The
appearance of Lesser Poland burgher houses is well recognised only in the largest
city in the region, namely in Cracow. There are numerous town, whose housing
blocks are poorly examined or not known at all. Our knowledge about townhouses
and urban dwelling there is still low. To reach that goal, it is necessary to combining
various disciplines such as history, art history, architecture, urban history and
archeology.
